Spring break is usually awesome in Bloomington, but it’s even better when six young, passionate Salvationists spend their week hanging out at the Bloomington Corps!

Sure we’ll treat them to the culinary delights of 4th street and show them the natural splendor of IU’s campus. But the real reason they are here is to help out with spring break VBS, lead Bible study and worship services, and get a glimpse of life here at The Salvation Army in Bloomington. We couldn’t be happier, and we think the kids will be too! The worst part is that they’re only here for a week.

The Salvation Army’s cadet program is based out of each of the Salvation Army’s four Colleges for Officer Training. In preparation for officership, cadets undergo academic, religious and social service training. On four occasions during their two year training, cadets leave their campus and are assigned to communities where they help administer programs. These assignments, like the one in Bloomington, help prepare them for the challenges and joys that they’ll experience as officers.

Fun Fact: Prior to graduation, the “s” on each lapel and the epaulet are blue. At graduation cadets become officers and those items become red. In fact, there are two officers in the picture above, and once you know this fun fact, it becomes very easy to spot them.

Two Sundays ago, youth at The Salvation Army in Bloomington were recognized. In pews filled with family, friends and fellow Salvationists, the students came forward one by one to receive their deep blue sashes. Not only do these look great but they will hold a growing number of badges.

The badges are awarded through two systems: the Adventure Corps for the boys and the Sunbeam Program for the girls. The youth spend up to a month going through lessons on a particular topic and for their participation and ability to know the lessons the youth accumulate badges that eventually fill their sashes.

These aren’t new program either! Since the 1920s, the Sunbeam and Girl Guard programs have reached out to area youth to provide fun, safe activities focused on Christ. The Adventure Corps emerged in the 1980s in the United States for boys. The main point of all of these groups is to promote strong character growth in children.

If you’d like to learn more about either of these programs please contact Lt. Catherine Fitzgerald who oversees the progress of the children.

Around 40 college students who are part of a traditional Salvation Army brass band or vocal ensemble will be visiting Bloomington November 13-15, 2009. Hosted by The Salvation Army of Monroe County, this group will be sharing with the community in several ways including nursing home visitation, neighborhood outreach, a community concert, and leading worship on Sunday morning.

The band and vocal ensemble is comprised of college students from Asbury Collegein Wilmore, Kentucky. Many have grown up in The Salvation Army church and participate in these music groups as a way of sharing the musical talent God has given them. Bloomington Corps officers, Jonathan and Catherine Fitzgerald, are alumni of this group and know personally how their ministry shares God’s love in a special way.

The band will be performing at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 14th, at 7:00 PM. The concert is completely free. You will not want to miss this rare and special treat!

The Bloomington Corps has one more soldier in its ranks. Mazulu Ntshangase took that important step Sunday in a ceremony celebrating his enrollment in The Salvation Army.

Mazulu’s story is one of many young people deciding to take that step for Christ. Having accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour and Lord, and desiring to fulfil their membership of His Church on earth as a soldier of The Salvation Army, they, by God’s grace, enter into a sacred covenant. Mazulu and others sign that Soldiers Covenant which you can read here.

A soldier is an integral part of the health of a local Salvation Army. Soldiers serve in leadership roles in the Church such as Sunday School teachers, womens ministry sargeants, young people’s secretary and leadership boards. To date there are nearly half a million soldiers in the United States.

To find out more about The Salvation Army Church, please visit us Sunday at 11:00 am or visit our website.

Every day 2.7 billion people struggle to live on less than $2 a day, according to the UN Millennium Project . Unclean water sources and relatedly diarrhea are a major cause of death for 2.6 billion who do not have basic sanitation. Women are poorly educated if at all, despite the evidence that education reaps myriad benefits for women and the community.

The Salvation Army is in these places, serving 118 countries worldwide, but the Corps serving in impoverished circumstanses look to places like Bloomington for support.

We are hosting the 2009 Harvest Festival: Auction and Dinner to support our brothers and sisters around the world, and we’re having fun doing it. If you’ve never attended a Billy Williams auction before, you’re missing out. He’ll be auctioning off tables of merchandise October 03; the prices are always right. All the proceeds directly benefit Salvation Army offices in needy locations worldwide. There will also be a dinner before hand, which you can get tickets by calling 336-4310.

And what a task it is. Kenyon is the Ministry Intern for The Salvation Army in Bloomington. So, when he isn’t sneaking onto Facebook, he’s busy assisting Lieutenants Jonathan and Catherine with projects large and small designed to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. His first project has been to work on this week’s Vacation Bible School.

The internship is designed to provide real life ministry experiences for young men and women who may someday become officers (pastors) in The Salvation Army.

Kenyon is a supremely qualified candidate for this internship. He graduating from the University of Michigan with a major in American Culture. That is where he helped begin PrayUM, a way for Christian students to come together to pray. It’s success on the UM campus is a testimony to Kenyon’s dedication to the Lord and his reliance on Him through prayer to overcome obstacles.

So please welcome Kenyon when you see him working throughout Monroe County.

The next time you and yours are at the corner of Rogers and Kirkwood in Bloomington, stop to notice the stonework and plantings above. Where there was once grass, there is now color, texture and beauty.

The Salvation Army’s Women’s Auxiliary helped to make this project happen, and their interest in the aesthetics of the buildings on the corner of Rogers and Kirkwood has made a significant difference!

It’s exciting to feel the energy of downtown Bloomington: the B-line trailhas opened, the Tuesday farmers market is in full swing, there are more and more people walking to their destinations and road crews are busy making the streets better places to drive. And now, The Salvation Army has but a small part to play in this buzzing activity. It’s corner on the outskirts of downtown is getting better too.

Jake Turner is the Bloomington Corps’ Ministry Intern. This is a position designed for those with ambitions to serve The Salvation Army as an officer. Turner like other ministry interns will spend two years preparing for officership by learning the skills necessary to begin Officer Training College.

Turner grew up in The Salvation Army but moved as a child. As a college student he worked at summer camps, until he heard of an opening at The Salvation Army’s Hidden Falls Camp. Spending a summer with these children got him reacquainted with the Army, and he pursued an internship, landing him in Bloomington.

But Turner wasn’t always so committed to serving God. A classically trained guitarist, Turner was well on his way to recording albums and gaining recognition for his talents. Realizing that selfish pride was propelling him along a worldly path, he abruptly ended his musical career for one in The Salvation Army.

Today Turner’s musical talents are used to God’s glory every Sunday morning as he helps lead worship services at The Salvation Army, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. “Music is my inspiration for everything, and is my gift from God. I want to use that gift to reach out to everyone and fulfill my goal as a Christian to bring non-believers to Christ.”

That type of attitude enhances the fresh, energetic leadership of the Lieutenants.
