Fire Safety Saves Lives

In the latest series of The Salvation Army Community Speakers, the Bloomington Fire Department came and spoke to the A.R.K. children about fire safety.
“Be Cool About Fire Safety”is a fun, educational video that can be found all over the internet. But the children at The Salvation Army were mesmerized by a real life fire man, who took the time to get to know them and answer their questions.
Fire Prevention Officer Scott Smith of the Bloomington Fire Department honored the children as Deputy Fire Marshals charging them with the responsibility of putting their knowledge about fire safety to good use at home and at The Salvation Army.
Studies show that when children learn about fire safety there are strong benefits. Nationwide it is reported that curious children set fires that are responsible for 150 deaths and $200 million in property damage; of those deaths 15-20% are children themselves.
A.R.K. is a weekly, open-door program for Bloomington children. It is fun-filled evening starting at 6:15 that blends games, visitors like Mr. Smith and Bible truths in character building exercises. It’s a unique program that is greatly beneficial to the youth attending. For more information contact, Lt. Catherine Fitzgerald here.
