NICU Assistance Program
Charlotte Ministries is a NICU Assistance program, inspired by a staff member’s struggle with having a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit.
Evaluated on a case-by-case basis, The Salvation Army provides care packages as well as financial assistance for families with a child currently in an Allen County NICU (and in special cases, children with cancer or other medical issues.) Assistance is provided upon demonstration of need and based upon donations received.

MARCH CASE: CONNOR
“At 36 weeks, Connor’s heart rate was low enough that the doctor decided an emergency c-section was necessary. He was unresponsive at delivery, but was mercifully able to be quickly resuscitated. We are uncertain how long Connor was without oxygen and the impact on his brain, which showed no activity in initial tests.
A few hours after birth, Connor was transferred to Lutheran NICU where he was placed in a cooling vest. The vest regulated his core temperature at around 92 degrees to try to protect his vital organs while the doctors tried to determine what was wrong. During that time of waiting and evaluating Connor’s health, we saw both encouraging and discouraging signs. While he had several apparent seizures and we remain uncertain about the severity of damage to his brain and other organs, Connor briefly opened his eyes, moved his extremities, demonstrated responsive gag reflex, and moved his head on his own.”
The greatest sign of improvement was when Connor was taken off the ventilator and began to breathe independently about 24 hours after birth. Connor has many tests ahead of him, and the family is unsure of how long they will be staying in the NICU.
