Five Year Old Captures the Spirit of Christmas: Shea Johnson shows what it means to care by collecting money for The Salvation Army
December 8, 2012 by mphelps
MADISON,
Ind. – Over 250 children will be receiving toys, clothing, and food from The Salvation Army in Jefferson County this Christmas – and some children are helping find donations for them. Shea Johnson, age five, decided that she wanted to help The Salvation Army in their Christmas efforts. Shea has collected money from her family, friends, and neighbors, even ringing a bell for donations.
Shea’s mission started when she received a Salvation Army bell at one of the local kettle stands in Jefferson County. Bell Ringers will sometimes give children a bell to take home if they donate at one of the kettle sites. When Shea arrived home with her bell, she realized she owned a red pale from which she could collect money.
“It’s exciting to see a young person take on the responsibility of helping others,” said Lt. Matthew Phelps, Corps Officer at the Jefferson County Salvation Army. “The mission of Jesus Christ is to bring salvation to a world in need. Shea, through her efforts, captures this spirit by raising money for those most in need in Jefferson County.”
Donations raised by Shea and others support The Salvation Army’s Christmas campaign, which funds Christmas efforts and social services throughout the entire year. This year The Salvation Army needs to raise $116,000 in order meet their Christmas goal. As of today, they have raised slightly over 50% of their goal.
