It’s Salvation Army Week!

May 14, 2012 by Lt. Jason Bigelow

It’s officially here! National Salvation Army Week

Today, we kick off our 59th annual National Salvation Army Week (May 14-20, 2012). Each year, this weeks serves as an opportunity to celebrate the efforts of volunteers, donors, and staff in serving our community.  The Salvation Army has been serving nationally for 132 years, and locally in Marion and Grant County for 113 years.

In celebration of this special week, we will be holding several events in order for those in our community to learn about and serve alongside The Salvation Army of Marion.  Here’s the agenda for the week:

Monday, May 14thCommunity Days Fundraiser @ Bob Evans – Print out this flyer and bring it with you as you dine at Bob Evans throughout the day, and they will donate %15 of your bill to The Salvation Army of Marion! What could be better than dinner and a donation in one?

Tuesday, May 15thDoughnut Day @ New Market – Come on down to New Market from 10am-2pm as we remember the work of The Salvation Army Doughnut Girls, who served in WWI & WWII. As our young soldiers faced physical and emotional peril amidst the fighting, female Salvation Army officers had the idea to comfort them with good home cooking, using their limited ingredients to create delicious fried doughnuts for the boys. Stop over and have a treat from our friends at New Market.  We’ll also have our canteen (Mobile Emergency Vehicle) for those who want to know more about our current Emergency Disaster Services.

Wednesday, May 16thOpen House @ The Salvation Army – Ever wonder what goes on over here?  Well, from 2pm-7pm on Wednesday, we’ll have the doors open and people available to give tours and information about the variety of services and programs available at your local Salvation Army Corps.  Bring the kids, because we’ll be featuring our Giant Red Kettle Bouncehouse for them to play in, and fun snacks to enjoy!  Take a glimpse into the year-round operations happening here to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, and to meet basic needs in our community.

Thursday, May 17thDine to Donate @ Applebee’s – Similar to the Bob Evans event on Monday… Print out this flyer and enjoy a meal at Applebee’s and they’ll donate %15 of your bill to The Salvation Army!  Go ahead and get that extra dessert… it’s for a good cause!

Friday & Saturday, May 18th & 19thBeat the Heat: Fan & Water Drive – As the temperatures rise, so do the frustrations of those struggling to pay their utility bills.  We’ll help them keep cool by providing fans and water throughout the summer as these resources are available.  So, bring in a fan or two and a case of water, and we’ll hand them out in our Social Service office as this sure-to-be hot summer rolls in.  (Calling this drive “Beat the Heat” does not necessarily have anything to do with our local support of the Indiana Pacers this week as they take on the Miama Heat in Round 2 of the NBA playoffs… or does it?)

Sunday, May 20th“Heaven Bound” Play by Bethel AME Church @ The Salvation Army – As our last event of the week, we want to celebrate the reason behind all we do, and that is the love of God found in Christ Jesus our Lord.  The folks at Bethel AME Church have been putting on this local play for many years, so we’re looking forward to seeing it and the reminder of the hope we have in Jesus.  Bring the family on Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm and enjoy this powerful play with us.

Please take advantage of the opportunities this week to get to know your local Salvation Army, and find out the array of good being done, especially if you have been or plan to be a donor.  We could not accomplish any of the long-standing services we provide without the help of our generous and caring community.

Make sure to connect with us on facebook and twitter as well!

National Salvation Army Week

May 3, 2012 by Lt. Jason Bigelow

National Salvation Army Week was first declared by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954. In the proclamation, Eisenhower noted:

“Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood . . . Their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans, giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”

May 14-20th, 2012, is National Salvation Army Week!  Be on the lookout all week for opportunities to learn about and share in the work of The Salvation Army of Marion & Grant County.

For starters, both Bob Evans and Applebee’s of Marion have teamed up with us to offer a tasty fundraising opportunity.  If you print the flyers below, and bring them in with you when you dine on the specific dates (Bob Evans is on Monday, May 14th, and Applebee’s is on Thursday, May 17th), the restaurant will donate %15 of your bill to The Salvation Army!  What could be better than dinner and a donation all in one?  So, print them off, give them to your friends, and spread the word!

Spring is in the air!

April 11, 2012 by Lt. Jason Bigelow

The sun is shining, flowers are blooming, and The Salvation Army is ready for some spring cleaning!  In just a few weeks, The Salvation Army will hold its quarterly Rummage Sale (May 4th & 5th).  Until then, if you’ve got some spring cleaning of your own to do, feel free to drop off your gently used items to The Salvation Army from 10am-3pm, Monday – Friday.  Otherwise, we hope you’ll stop by that weekend and browse through the array of furniture, clothing, books, and other products for sale.  All proceeds from the Rummage Sale go to help our community through the variety of services and programs we offer.  As always, The Salvation Army Women’s Ministries group will have fresh baked goods for sale as well, so bring your sweet tooth!
