Jonathan Cooper.

On Saturday, May 18th The Salvation Army will have a truck parked in the parking lot of Napa Auto Parts, at the corner of 10th and Broadway, Princeton Indiana. WRAY’s “Uncle Dave” will be broadcasting live in hopes the organization will be able to fill the truck with donations from local individuals, groups, and businesses. The local Princeton Save-a-Lot will be having sales from now until the 18th on canned goods by the skid, case, or individually.

Local area churches and schools have also joined the fight. Lt. Chrissy Cooper said, “It’s so awesome to see everyone coming together to help our community”.

The organization has been helping those in need for over 100 years in Gibson and Pike Counties. Lt. Cooper said, “We’re really proud of our reputation and our history in Gibson and Pike counties. We pride ourselves on being responsible with donors’ generosity, and I think that’s the only way we could have been Doing the Most Good for over a century”.

About The Salvation Army:

The Salvation Army is responding after a large explosion at a fertilizer plant devastated the small city of West, TX, just before 8:00 PM (CDT) Wednesday evening. The Salvation Army quickly mobilized support teams and by midnight had deployed five Emergency Disaster Canteens (mobile kitchens) to the area.

The Salvation Army is providing refreshment and emotional and spiritual care to survivors and first responders at several locations in and around West. Disaster Canteens (mobile kitchens) from Waco, Corsicana, Waxahachie, Fort Worth and Williamson County are all serving at the scene. Major Dan Ford, Commanding Officer of the Waco Salvation Army, is the Incident Commander coordinating The Salvation Army response with city and state emergency personnel.

The temperature has dropped dramatically overnight with heavy rain moving into the area. The Salvation Army has 50 cases of rain suits, jackets and blankets to distribute. This morning, The Salvation Army is preparing to serve breakfast to 500 people and as the situation develops will remain ready to serve as long as needed.

Jonathan Cooper, pastor and “corps officer” in Princeton.

Special guests Major Bob & Joyce Gauthier, made the trek from Chicago, Ill. to help instruct on the topic. Major Bob Gauthier, in one of the more poignant moments of the weekend said, “You can’t have power in the pulpit if you don’t have deep committed prayer in the pew”. Not only was there great instruction, but also opportunities to lead and be lead in deep prayer on a variety of topics that included government, healing, spiritual growth, the spiritual condition of the community, and the Army’s impact on others. A total of 260 came to the various meeting opportunities, and many of them were visibly impacted by the teaching of the Majors.

One congregant said, “I’ve always thought prayer was important, but there’s something really refreshing about taking time to intentionally focus on it”. The Salvation Army, as first and foremost a church, continues to pursue the things of God, and has indeed has renewed and deepened its commitment to prayer.

The potential for Salvation Army work in Cambodia has been a topic of conversation at International Headquarters since 2008, when the Korea Territory first expressed an interest in exploring the possibility of mission outreach there. A short-term ministry programme to Cambodia was commenced by a small team from the Korea Territory in 2009. A member of that team, Young People’s Sergeant Major Kim, Hong-soo, returned to Cambodia some time later and commenced a ministry with some university students in Phnom Penh.

During the 95th corps anniversary celebrations at Ah Hyun Corps in the Seoul Division of the Korea Territory, a Declaration of Vision was made, one aspect of which was a commitment to plant a corps in Cambodia.

While the short-term ministry was under way, various other aspects, such as legal registration of The Salvation Army in the Kingdom of Cambodia, were being pursued and have now been completed.

The official opening was conducted by Commissioners Park, Man-hee and Kim, Keum-nyeo (territorial leaders, Korea Territory) in Phnom Penh on Thursday 22 November. They were accompanied by a group of 45 officers and soldiers from the Korea Territory. The officers appointed in charge of the new work are Captain Shin, Jin-kyun and Captain Lim, Hyang.

The inaugural meeting was attended by civic dignitaries (including the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia) together with local church and business leaders.

Please join us in prayer for the ministry that will take place in Cambodia.

Jonathan Cooper, corps officer of the local arm of the organization said, “I’m humbled every year by the public’s response to our needs. Each year there is some apprehension about raising enough to help sustain our presence, and each time – whether slow economy, bad weather, or any other set back, this community comes together and makes it happen”. “I’m not sure it’s possible…”, Lt. Cooper said, “…to thank our community with spoken word. So we’re going to thank them the only way we know how, with quality services provided to those in need in our area.”

The Salvation Army has been responding to those needs in Gibson and Pike Counties for well over a century, and it seems that this past Christmas fundraising season has assured they will be able to continue providing those quality services. Lt. Cooper said, “Our brand is Doing the Most Good, and that’s a promise. We promise and pledge to Do the Most Good we possibly can with every penny to which we’ve been given”.

If you would still like to donate or if you would like to donate additionally, you can mail in cash, checks, and money orders to P.O. Box 1258, Princeton IN 47670. Also there are many ways to donate online by clicking “donate online” option at the top of the page. Every penny of your donations stay right here in Gibson and Pike Counties.

Jonathan Cooper. He went on to say, “…but the community always seems to step in and support us and our mission of meeting human need without discrimination”. The Salvation Army has been meeting that need in Gibson and Pike Counties for 105 years, and the organization hopes to remain for another 105 years, says Lt. Chrissy Cooper.

The Salvation Army’s brand is “Doing the Most Good”. Lt. Jonathan Cooper explained this is a promise. “We promise to provide for those in need. We promise to stretch every penny. We promise to Do the Most Good possible with the public’s donations.”

The organization’s annual “You Can Help” drive brought in a record amount this year, totaling nearly $19,000. With it’s sponsors American Real Estate, 5/3 Bank, and Toyota Boshoku, this record for the 17th annual radiothon was reached on the “Going Home Show” with Uncle Dave Kunkle and featured local philanthropist and retire police chief Nick Michas. “The public always seems to come through for us”, said Michas.

The Salvation Army is celebrating its early success, but is also aware of the task ahead. The organization has only 2 weeks to raise just under $50,000. “I believe, with the public’s help, we can meet this goal and help thousands once again in 2013″, said Lt. Jonathan.

This past year, The Salvation Army provided…

over 8,000 hot meals

energy assistance that impacted over 500 people

over 30,000 lbs of food through it’s pantry

free music lessons and character building programs for kids

thousands of articles of clothing

… just to name a few.

To donate, please stop by any of the iconic Red Kettles, or you can mail in checks and money orders to P.O. Box 1258, Princeton IN 47670. Also there are many ways to donate online by clicking “donate online” option at the top of the page. Every penny of your donations stay right here in Gibson and Pike Counties.

Feeding has already begun at shelters in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions and mobile canteen units will deploy to the areas of greatest need as damage is assessed in the coming days. Crews will provide food, hydration, clean-up kits as well as emotional and spiritual care.
New York City

In New York City officials from the Office of Emergency Management have appointed The Salvation Army as the lead agency for the City’s Food Access Plan, to coordinate feeding at city shelters. For the next few days The Salvation Army will be serving food at Seward High School in lower Manhattan where 1,000 people are being fed breakfast, lunch and dinner.
“It’s clear now that Hurricane Sandy was and continues to be a major and historic storm impacting millions of people,” said Major George Hood, National Community Relations Secretary for The Salvation Army in the United States. “Residents of the impacted areas can rest assured that The Salvation Army will be with them for the long-haul – providing practical, physical and spiritual support at the areas of greatest need.”
Current Salvation Army activities in other impacted areas include:

In New Jersey:
The Salvation Army is serving meals, snacks and drinks to hundreds of evacuees at 11 shelters in five counties.
While serving meals at a shelter in Union Beach, a Salvation Army canteen and a volunteer vehicle were flooded when waters rose unexpectedly. Despite the loss of these vehicles Salvation Army volunteers continued to serve meals to both displaced residents and first responders.
Local senior citizens found refuge from Hurricane Sandy at The Salvation Army building in Red Bank.
In Montclair, The Salvation Army is operating a “charging” center for members of the community needing to charge their phones, computers or other electronic devices.
A canteen is embedded with Task Force 1, the State’s official search and rescue team.
Elsewhere in New York:
The Salvation Army provided food and shelter assistance at two locations in Albany as Sandy impacted that area last night.
On Long Island, The Salvation Army is assisting the American Red Cross with redistribution of supplies to eight shelters.
In Pennsylvania:
The Salvation Army is serving approximately 1,000 meals per day in nine shelters throughout the Philadelphia area.
In Lehigh Valley and West Chester, the Army is providing meals at three shelters.
In Stamford, CT:
The Salvation Army has served more than 400 meals and served 650 dinners Tuesday night using supplies collected for this year’s Thanksgiving meal.
The Salvation Army’s Emergency and Disaster Services System
The Salvation Army maintains a fleet of disaster vehicles and supply warehouses across the United States to enable speedy mobilization. There are more than 300 emergency response vehicles in the eastern and southern United States alone and nearly 600 units nationwide.
In addition to food, hydration and emotional and spiritual care, The Salvation Army is also prepared to provide:
Clean-up kits containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies
Hygiene kits
Shower units
First-aid supplies
Communications support
The Salvation Army also provides a ministry of presence to residents looking for hope in the midst of turmoil. Pastoral care is available for all those impacted, but is not a prerequisite for receiving assistance. The Salvation Army encourages all residents of areas in the storm’s path to stay informed of and heed all warnings and evacuation orders. Disaster response professionals recommend having a three to five day supply of food and water for each member of your family as well as flashlights, medication and battery powered radios.
The Salvation Army asks people who want to help those affected by this disaster to visit www.salvationarmyusa.org or call 1-800-SAL-ARMY (1-800-725-2769). Donors may also contribute $10 via their phone bill by text messaging the word STORM to 80888, and confirming the donation with the word, “Yes.” *
At this point, in-kind donations, such as used clothing and used furniture, are not being accepted for hurricane relief. However, these items are vital to supporting the day-to-day work of your local Salvation Army. Please consider giving these items to your local Salvation Army Family Store or dial 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825).

Expenditures for all of our Social Services have increased 273% this year as compared to our 2012 budget.

These critical programs would not exist without monetary donations from the people of Gibson and Pike Counties. Lt. Jonathan Cooper, Salvation Army corps officer said, “I think the public supports us at Christmas so well, and may believe that’s the only time of year we need help. But that could be further from the truth.” The Salvation Army provides throughout the year; feeding over 7,000 people hot meals, and extending assistance that will impact more than 22,000 people in 2012.

The Salvation Army in Princeton provides groceries, hot meals, and assistance with rent, utilities, temporary housing, medications, clothing, household items, and toiletries. It also provides youth character building, youth singing and band classes, health and wellness classes, and soon will begin financial counseling classes all at no charge to the attendee. The Salvation Army in Princeton also houses NA and AA groups that meet weekly as well as a safe and fun place for court supervised child visitations.

A regular guest at the weekly community dinner said “I depend on The Salvation Army for my dinners. It’s the only place I go away full. And I don’t just mean with food. The Salvation Army provides me with somewhere safe and inviting to talk to people and pray. I used to pray when I was a kid, but now I pray every time I’m with the folks at the Army.”

The storm is expected to gain strength as a category one hurricane by Tuesday evening, with a course that may take it through New Orleans with heavy rainfall and strong winds. The Salvation Army is prepared to not only provide food and hydration, but also emotional and spiritual care to anyone who may be impacted by Isaac.
“We are taking every precaution to make sure that anyone who is impacted by Hurricane Isaac—resident or emergency responder—has all they need to make it through the storm, physically and spiritually,” said Major George Hood, National Community Relations Secretary for The Salvation Army in the United States. “Our personnel are taking the storm very seriously and will be ready to respond and move into impacted areas to provide needed support.”
The Salvation Army has already provided services to Florida residents impacted by Isaac over the weekend. The storm left thousands of Floridians without power and caused flooding in low-lying areas. The Salvation Army helped prepare meals and served hundreds at shelters throughout the Florida Keys. The Salvation Army is also supporting first responders and survivors with hydration in downtown Tampa and surrounding areas.
Salvation Army personnel throughout the central Gulf Coast are closely monitoring the storm track. The Army has 24 mobile feeding units and a fully equipped 54-foot field kitchen ready for immediate deployment to the affected communities in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi.
The Salvation Army is also making necessary preparations to have additional personnel trained in spiritual and emotional care on the front lines, recognizing that Post Traumatic Stress Disorder could be a significant problem in these communities. The unexpected nature of a storm, coupled with the stresses of evacuation, financial needs and rebuilding, can leave physically, emotionally and spiritually drained. The Salvation Army’s ministry of presence provides compassionate care to residents looking for hope in the midst of turmoil. Pastoral care is available for all those impacted, but is not a prerequisite for receiving assistance from The Salvation Army.
In addition to feeding and spiritual care, The Salvation Army is also prepared to provide:

Clean-up kits containing brooms, mops, buckets and cleaning supplies

Hygiene kits

Shower units

First-aid supplies

Emotional/spiritual care

The Salvation Army encourages all residents of areas in the storm’s path to prepare an emergency supply kit and stay informed of all warnings and evacuation orders.
Donors may also contribute $10 via their phone bill by text messaging the word STORM to 80888, and confirming the donation with the word, “Yes.” Checks may be made out to The Salvation Army Disaster Relief, PO BOX 1959 Atlanta, GA 30301. Please designate “2012 Hurricane Relief” on all checks.
At this point, in-kind donations are not being accepted for hurricane relief. While used clothing and furniture are seldom required during an incident, these gifts are vitally important in supporting the day-to-day work of your local Salvation Army. Please consider supporting our disaster relief efforts with cash gifts and donate your used items to your local Salvation Army Family Store or dial 1-800-SA-TRUCK (1-800-728-7825).
