125 YEAR ANNIVERSARY AND NATIONAL SALVATION ARMY WEEK

April 19, 2013 by · Comments Off

The Salvation Army is celebrating their 125 year anniversary in Vigo County in 2013 and you are invited to help us!  We are looking for 125 people/businesses to donate $125 each to help our ministry as we serve those with basic human needs.

During 2012, The Salvation Army has provided the following services in the WabashValley:

  • Distributed groceries to 4,837 people
  • Provided 4,107 people with personal hygiene and household items which cannot be purchased with food stamps
  • Gave 9,930 referrals or information to clients in order to steer them towards additional resources in the community designed to assist in meeting basic human needs
  • Helped 169 families with rent to prevent homelessness or utility assistance in order to keep their utility service connected
  • Assisted 559 children with basic school supplies

Donations can be mailed to the main office or made online. Your response by May 3 would be greatly appreciated so that we can conclude our efforts by the beginning of National Salvation Army Week which is May 13. This will allow us the time we need to include your name in our advertisement in the Tribune Star as a contributor to our celebration of 125 years serving Vigo County.  A commemorative plaque will also be presented for display at The Army’s headquarters at 234 S. 8th St.

Should you have any questions regarding our programs, please do not hesitate to contact Captain Gordon Hoag by email at gordon_hoag@usc.salvationarmy.org or at 812-232-4081, ext 12.

2012 Red Kettle Campaign Begins

November 14, 2012 by · Comments Off

The 2012 Red Kettle Campaign kicked off on Wednesday, November 14 with a ceremony at Center Court in Honey Creek Mall with Campaign Chair Honnalora Hubbard, Director of Terre Haute Ministries.

For more than 124 years, The Salvation Army in Terre Haute has been working to “Do The Most Good” that we possibly can for the needy in the Wabash Valley at Christmas time and all year round.

This Christmas season, The Salvation Army will once again help those in need by providing assistance to more than 1600 families to help them make this the happiest time of the year.

Your help is greatly needed:

  • Volunteers are needed to help ring in the Christmas season at 19 kettle locations.   If you’ve never rung a bell before, give it a try!  Volunteering for just 4 hours will help us feed 4 families of 4 for 4 days.
  • Help recruit volunteer groups for bell ringing.  It’s a great project for civic clubs, service organizations, church groups, scout troops, fraternities and sororities or individuals and families.
  • Drop your spare change and your dollars in the Red Kettle when you pass by.  It’s amazing how quickly those contributions will add up.

Red Kettles are located at the following local businesses: Baesler’s Market, Big Lots, Hobby Lobby, JC Penney, K-Mart, Kroger, Macy’s, Open Door Christian Book Store, Rural King, Sam’s Club, Sears, WalMart and Walgreens.

The Salvation Army hopes to raise its goal of $180,000 during the Red Kettle Campaign.  If each person in Terre Haute gave $3.00 we would be able to reach our goal.  That breaks down to just 50 cents a week for the next six weeks.

The new school year is only a few weeks away and once again The Salvation Army in Terre Haute will be helping to make sure that kids from struggling families have what they need to do their best in their classes.

During the coming weeks, The Salvation Army will be collecting and distributing school supplies for children in our community whose families struggle with the additional expense this time of year.  Captain Hoag, local administrator states, “The average cost of sending one child back to school can be a couple hundred dollars with all the recommended supplies and necessary clothing.  For many residents of Vigo County who are struggling to make ends meet, preparing for the first days of school puts an even greater burden on them.”

The Salvation Army expects to provide more than 450 boys and girls in kindergarten through 12th grade with supplies and other basic necessities the week before the school year begins, and invites your support.  Donations of crayons, pens, scissors, handwriting tablets, glue sticks, pocket folders, loose leaf paper and backpacks are greatly needed.  Financial contributions also give the flexibility to buy in bulk at reduced prices.  School supplies or financial donations can be taken to the office at 234 S 8th St.  Please call 232-4081 for more information.

Local Salvation Army to honor members of the Armed Forces

The Salvation Army will be celebrating National Salvation Army Week May 13-19 by remembering and honoring those who are serving in the military overseas.

“It’ll be our pleasure to provide some support to our heroes by sending a little love from home. We are asking people to contact our office with the name of a family member or loved one who is serving overseas and we will send them a care package,” says Captain Gordon Hoag, local Administrator.  “It’s very difficult for those serving our country to be away from family and friends. We’d like to take this opportunity to let them know we’re thinking of them and that we’re proud of what they’re doing.”

Anyone can call The Salvation Army office to submit a name.  The phone number is 812-232-4081.   Names will be taken through the end of May and care packages will be delivered around the fourth of July.

Donations are also being accepted for those who would like to help with providing items to send.  Items of particular interest are deodorant, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, puzzle books and white socks.  Any financial contributions will help cover the cost of purchasing supplies and shipping expenses.  Monetary donations can also be made securely online.

God bless all of our brave servicemen and women.
