Warsaw Rotary Goes Over One Million Mark

WARSAW ROTARY GOES OVER ONE MILLION DOLLARS FOR THE SALVATION ARMY

The Warsaw Rotary Club announced at its weekly meeting on Friday, December 23rd, that the club has surpassed raising over one million dollars for The Salvation Army during its annual Christmas campaign according to John Hall, Co-Chairman of the event.  The fund raising event was started in 1965 by N. Bruce Howe to honor Brigadier Brice Phillipson and his longtime service to “Others”.  The first event raised $800 according to Howe and club records and was called “Brice’s Day”. Phillipson was “promoted to glory” in the early 1970’s but the event continued in his honor.  “Each year the amount continued to grow,” noted Howe at the event. “I remember when we went over $20,000 in the late 1980’s and we thought that was impossible.”  In 1990, then President Don Clemens declared the event be changed to Phillipson-Howe Day in honor of Howe’s many years of effort to chair the event.  John Hall was named co-chairman and a few years later Howe asked that the event be changed to Rotary Salvation Army Day.  Hall’s research of club records resulted in the discovery that the total for 46 years would surpass one million dollars if over $24,000 was collected in 2011. “We needed to celebrate,” Hall told the club. “I am very proud of what Rotarians have been able to do in this community to support the efforts of The Salvation Army to serve others in need at Christmas and throughout the year.”  The Warsaw Rotary club tallied their checks and cash and announced that $50,000 was gathered for 2011.  “There are no words to adequately say “thanks” for what Rotary has done,” commented Ken Locke, Community Ministries Coordinator, at the meeting.  “With so many needs this year, as there have been in the past, Rotary has once again come along side The Salvation Army,” Locke shared. “Rotary has been a partner with the Army for 90 years since we “invaded” Kosciusko County in 1921.  I see the needs every day and am able to help because of your giving.”  Cadet Esteban Pommier, Salvation Army Director, closed the meeting by thanking the Rotarians for living up to the ideal of “Service Above Self” and in the true spirit of Christmas and the birth of the greatest giver to ever live, Jesus Christ.  N. Bruce Howe has been recognized in the past for his service by receiving the “Others” Award and the “William Booth Award” from The Salvation Army.  John R. Hall is a Life Member of The Salvation Army Advisory Board.

Gold Coin Found In Kettle

A 1927 Gold Sovereign was found in the Kettle from Marsh.  Wrapped in a dollar bill it fell out while Ken Locke, Community Ministries Coordinator, was helping to count donations.  The Salvation Army is grateful for all the monies put in the kettles, gold or not, Locke noted.
